In the midst of all the celebrating Sunday, Santonio Holmes broke out his “wings,” extending his arms out to the side after his six-yard touchdown edged the Houston Texans once and for all.
Holmes said he's isn’t like a lot of receivers in the league; he’s not one for showboating or attention-grabbing antics. This touchdown celebration, he said, isn't about personal glorification.
“It’s 'The Flight Boys' in the building, that’s what it is,” he said with a smile. “Myself, Braylon [Edwards] and J-Co [Jerricho Cotchery], we were all talking amongst ourselves and came up with the name “Flight Boys.”
Then he turned to his locker and pulled out a white T-shirt with three airplanes etched in green. Each airplane had the players’ numbers – 17, 89 and 10 – and underneath read the phrase: “Flight 561” for Holmes’ hometown area code.
“You’ve got J-Co, who’s ‘Flight 205’ and you got Braylon who’s – what’s Detroit? 303 or something like that? It’s just something we came up with amongst ourselves. Just trying to keep it low-key. It also represents the Jets so we definitely want to show off a little bit after we score a touchdown.”
And if other teams take it as showboating, so be it, said Holmes.
“If that’s the way they want to take it, who cares?” he said. “I’m playing for the New York Jets. I’m not playing for any other team right now.”
