Former Jets punter Steve Weatherford, who moved to the Giants last year and earned a Super Bowl ring, has not been kind to his old team. Last season, he criticized Jets special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff, and recently, Weatherford said he doesn’t believe Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has matured as much as he should have in three years to establish himself as the team leader.

When Sanchez was asked about the criticism from Weatherford (pictured at Super Bowl) on Thursday, he kinda, sorta gave Weatherford the benefit of the old “quoted out of context” dodge. “I haven’t heard all of it,” Sanchez said of Weatherford’s quote. “If I know Steve like I think I know Steve, there’s a good chance he was goofing around and it came off wrong. But if not…”

Before Sanchez could finish that thought, a reporter said Weatherford said he had reached out to Sanchez to clarify things. “He did,” Sanchez said. “We’re fine. He’s good. I know Steve pretty well.”

Somehow, it didn’t sound like they’d be going out to dinner together anytime soon.
