Greg McElroy's rookie season is on hold at the moment.
The quarterback had surgery this morning on his dislocated right thumb, suffered in last night's preseason finale against the Eagles at MetLife Stadium. The team said McElroy will be out indefinitely and there are no plans to put him on injured reserve, which would end his season.
McElroy hit his right thumb on the helmet of one of his offensive linemen being pushed back into him. His injury leaves the Jets possibly in the market for a third quarterback.
Mark Brunell, the immediate backup to third-year man Mark Sanchez, hasn't played in the preseason due to calf and pinkie injuries. But Rex Ryan said after last night's game that Brunell was fine and actually wanted to play. The Jets, however, opted to play it safe with the soon-to-be 41-year old.
