FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Mike Goodson is as good as gone.

At least that's the impression Rex Ryan gave Tuesday when asked about the running back being a no-show on the first day of mandatory minicamp.

"That's a good question. I don't know," the Jets coach said when asked for an explanation for Goodson's absence.

Goodson -- who did not attend the team's voluntary organized team activities -- will be subject to a fine for missing mandatory minicamp.

"I rather talk about the guys that are here," Ryan said. "And just understand, I recognize the fact that he is not here and that situation will be dealt with."

Goodson was the first free-agent signing of John Idzik's tenure as Jets general manager. But it appears the three-year deal given to Goodson was a mistake. He is facing weapons charges stemming from a May 2013 arrest in Denville, New Jersey. As a result of the incident, he was suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Shortly after being reinstated, he tore his ACL and MCL.

Ryan said he has not spoken to Goodson this offseason and, to his knowledge, neither has anyone else in the Jets organization. Ryan also said the lack of communication is rather unusual. "I would think so," he said.

"I don't think we've ever had a guy miss a mandatory minicamp. I think [Darrelle] Revis might have even been here," he added, referring to the cornerback whose Jets career featured highly-publicized contract disputes.

Asked for a comment regarding Goodson's absence, his agent, Kennard McGuire, wrote in an email: "Mike has to be accountable and responsible for his own decisions and actions."

During the team's predraft news conference on April 30, Idzik maintained that Goodson has a spot on the roster for the foreseeable future. "We assume that Mike is a Jet," the GM said at the time. "We've always made that assumption. Unfortunately, he had to end the season on injured reserve. He didn't get much time with us last year."

But with Chris Ivory, former 2,000-yard rusher Chris Johnson, Bilal Powell and Alex Green, it appears Goodson will be the odd man out. Still, Ryan was careful not to close the door. "Well, again, let's just see what happens," he said. " . . . Again, let's talk about the guys that are here. We've got everybody else here except him. I feel great about the guys that are here."

Notes & quotes. The Jets signed the last of their 12 draft picks, third-round cornerback Dexter McDougle . . . Ryan said Johnson, who is rehabbing from meniscus surgery, will continue to do individual drills during minicamp, but will be held out of team drills.
