Tom Moore was once again at practice today and it's a sight the Jets are about to get used to.
Moore, hired in the offseason as an offensive consultant, will be hanging around the Jets for the rest of the season. Moore, 73, had been mostly reviewing game footage and game plans from his Hilton Head, S.C. home. But now, he's going to be with the coaching staff daily rather than communicating via telephone or fax.
“We’ve wanted him around the whole year all along," Rex Ryan said, "but I also recognized that the man is retired and asking him to stay the entire season was not going to be fair to him and his wife. He’s here. Everything is OK at home and Tom was like, Why not? Let’s go for it.’ ”
Moore made it clear he's "just making observations. Brian [Schottenheimer] runs the show. Brian's done -- and is doing - a tremendous job." Still, he's glad to be on board for the rest of the season.
"Rex let me be involved and I enjoy it strictly from a standpoint that the game doesn’t pass me by," Moore said. "If you stay out of it for a year or two, new things like nuances come in. Like I said, I’m a lifer."
A lifer that prefers to be with the Jets' coaching staff rather than simply observing from home.
"It’s fun being where the action is, if you want to know the truth," Moore said. "Even in what very, very limited role I’m in, it’s fun being around it. I’ve been around it, this is my 36th year. So even though I’m not involved I’m still around."
Mark Sanchez seems to be thrilled to have the former Colts' offensive coordinator in the saddle, knowing Moore's vast football I.Q. can help him in some sort of way.
"It’s been great," the Jets quarterback said. "I love having him around, I thought he was a big help during training camp. It’s just so much knowledge with one guy and so much experience and he can really help, whether it’s the quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, tight ends or offensive lineman, he’s a big help. We love having him around.
