The Jets will inaugurate a Ring of Honor at halftime of the Aug. 16 preseason opener against the Giants, the first in franchise history in a stadium the team (at least partly) owns.
The first class will include coach Weeb Ewbank, Joe Namath, Winston Hill, Joe Klecko, Curtis Martin and Don Maynard.
Their names will be displayed in both end zones, with more to come each season as selected by a committee led by owner Woody Johnson. There will be no minimum or maximum number of selections each year.
"With this new stadium, we now have a proper way to salute those who have helped make this franchise what it is today," Johnson said yesterday in a news release.
The Giants also plan to institute a Ring of Honor in New Meadowlands Stadium, but have not yet announced its members or when they will be inducted.
Each team's honorees are expected to be displayed only during its games.
