No snaps for Christian Hackenberg

Why didn’t Christian Hackenberg get in the game?

Simple, said Todd Bowles. There just wasn’t enough time.

With four quarterbacks on the roster, there are only so many reps to go around. And after Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith and Bryce Petty got their fill, the clock ran out before Hackenberg could make his NFL preseason debut.

“We wanted to take a look at Geno and Bryce,” Bowles said. “And to play Hackenberg with minimal reps in practice would be doing him a disservice to play him with minimal reps in a game.”

Asked if the second-round pick will have to wait until the fourth preseason game to see live action, Bowles said: “That remains to be seen.’’

He added of the top three quarterbacks on the depth chart: “We’re not going to take away from their reps and he’s still learning. He has time. It’s not like we’re forced to play him right now.”
