Defense is Rex Ryan’s forte.
But the Jets head coach revealed Monday that he’s loosened the reigns a little on the play-calling side and is allowing defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to take charge during games.
“Oh yeah, Mike’s making much more (calls this year),” said Ryan, who added that defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman can also make play decisions.
The coach also emphasized that Pettine isn’t to blame for the miscues on defense.
“It’s not his fault,” Ryan said. “He’s been calling the ones that work. I’ve got to do a better job of when I call them.”
The coach said he called most of the plays last year, but occasionally leaned on Pettine and Thurman. This season, he thought a changed needed to be made.
“We’ve been together (for so long), it was time for him to step up and call more of it,” Ryan said. “…He’s doing a great job the guys have complete confidence in him. I’m there, but I don’t have to call every single play.”
