FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Eric Smith could have gone to Harvard.

But even now, the Jets safety shies away from talking about his superior intelligence. The Columbus, Ohio, native chose to forgo an Ivy League education for a criminal justice degree from Michigan State, simply because football was his calling and athletic scholarships weren't an option at the Cambridge, Mass., university.

The ever-quiet and often reserved Smith sits in front of his locker, barely noticeable next to gregarious, trash-talking teammate Bart Scott. But the Jets brainiac shows there's more than meets the eye underneath his helmet and football pads.
