As Mark Sanchez's turnovers mounted in 2012, it became painfully clear the Jets couldn't just hand him the starting job again to start training camp.

But don't expect JaMarcus Russell to be competing with Sanchez in Cortland.

The Jets "had some very exploratory, informal discussions" about the first-overall pick in 2007, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. But that doesn't mean the former Oakland Raider quarterback, who is trying to mount a comeback as a defensive tackle, is on the Jets’ radar now.

Within two years of being drafted, Russell was labeled one of the biggest busts in NFL history. He also was arrested in 2010 for consuming “purple drank” – aka, a concoction using codeine syrup – at his home in Mobile, Ala.
