Santonio Holmes returned from Germany more enlightened and more aware – but slightly off his game.
After missing four OTAs due to his recent visit with wounded and sick troops in Ramstein and Landstughl, the Jets wide receiver returned to practice this week. But he was spotted taking a break during drills, which led many to wonder if he had tweaked a hamstring, or worse.
Holmes, however, insisted injury was not the reason. Instead, he had asked the to take plays off because he’s not up to speed with the rest of the receiving corps.
“I was talking to the coaches and letting them understand that (I was getting) too many reps today,” Holmes said. “I’ve been gone for a while so I can’t be at full tempo like the rest of these guys and where they want us to be at. So giving us a few reps off is much-needed for all of us.”
The wide receiver was scheduled for about 35 reps today, but he ended up taking between 20-25, he said.
“Right now, I’m at OTA (No.) 5 and the team is at 9,” said Holmes, who added that his main goal for mini-camp is to remain healthy. “And I’ve got a lot of catching up to do for myself.”
Head coach Rex Ryan didn’t seem concerned that his star wideout needed a lengthy breather.
“He’s a veteran guy, he knows his body and we’re going to lean on that,” said the coach.
