Todd Bowles sees something in Quinton Coples. Whether that's at defensive end or outside linebacker remains to be seen, however. According to a source, the Jets plan to pick up Coples' fifth-year option for 2016 by the May 3 deadline.

The Jets could also choose to cut him before the start of the 2016 season. But the decision to pick up his option is an indication that the new Jets' regime believes Coples can be a fit in Bowles' defensive system.

Coples, 24, has shown flashes when chasing after quarterbacks. But his growth appeared to be stunted once he was switched to an outside linebacker by former head coach Rex Ryan. Coples had a career-high 6.5 sacks last season, but struggled when he was asked to drop back into coverage.

In his three seasons with the Jets, he's totaled 16.5 sacks and 105 tackles in 46 games. And he's also proven he's at his best when his hand is in the dirt.
