Todd Bowles may be handling the defensive play-calling duties again this week.
The Jets head coach couldn’t say whether defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers would return for Sunday’s game against the Colts. Bowles ran the defense against the Broncos with Rodgers away from the team with a “serious” health issue.
Bowles said he hoped to know more Monday, but the Jets may not have anything to announce yet out of respect for Rodgers. There was a report that Rodgers would take an extended leave.
“I don’t know how true that is yet,” Bowles said on a conference call Monday. “Once I know more I can say more. I’m not saying he is yet. I’m hoping for the best. But we’ll see how it goes.”
The Jets were shaken about the news of Rodgers’ illness, which Bowles relayed to them Friday. The defense played inspired in the 34-16 win over the Broncos. Many of the players said they were thinking about Rodgers and dedicated the performance to him.
“I texted him before the game,” safety Jamal Adams said. “I told him that we’re going to go out there and we’re going to play for him and get this win. I know he was happy.”
Martin done for season
Bowles acknowledged that linebacker Josh Martin is out for the season after sustaining two concussions in four weeks. The Jets placed him on IR last week.
