Welker talks football (seemingly with more emphasis on the first part of the word)

Was Wes Welker talking in code and taking shots at Rex Ryan?

The Patriots wide receiver held a press conference at Gilette Stadium today and talked about a number of topics from his injury last year to his matchup with Darrelle Revis to the young players on the Patriots’ roster. But one body part seemed to keep coming up in his answers: Feet.

Of course by now everyone knows about the videos and photographs that were found on the Internet last month that involved Ryan and his wife and, well, her feet. Which makes it almost odd that Welker would use the word “foot” or “feet” eight times in his answers and twice use the word “toe.”

When he was asked about last year’s playoff game after he had injured his knee, he said he was sitting with his “foot” up, not his leg or his knee. When he was asked about the rookies on the team, he called them good “foot” soldiers. Twice he remarked that Revis has good feet, and to balance it out he even said teammate Deion Branch has good feet as well.

He also said that the team has to be on its toes, and that you have to go full-throttle in the playoffs. “You can’t just stick your toe in the water, you’ve got to jump right in,” he said.

It did seem rather conspicuous, the words he was using. At one point I know I looked at a colleague and raised an eyebrow. But it wasn't until I was able to sit down and count the number of references that I began to wonder about Welker's vocabulary.

Ryan said earlier this week that the Patriots are saying far worse things about him than Antonio Cromartie said about Tom Brady. Their comments just aren’t being printed, Ryan said.

Maybe, just maybe, this is one Patriot's way of getting them public.
