Joe Namath had plenty of critical things to say about Rex Ryan and Santonio Holmes during our extensive talk yesterday. But one guy on the team Namath really likes is the quarterback.
Yup. Broadway Joe is a big supporter of Mark Sanchez.
"I like Sanchez," Namath told me. "He’s made some mistakes, but he’s game. He works hard. I really have seen a growth, a maturity there. I like his quick feet. There's nothing I dislike about him."
Namath also likes that Sanchez has remained above the fray when it comes to criticism that has come his way. Earlier in the season, wide receiver Santonio Holmes suggested publicly that Sanchez needs to step up his game, something that bothered Namath.
"Some of the veterans weren’t giving Mark enough credit for what he’s established," Namath said. "He’s bitten the bullet. He has never said anything negtative about any one of his teammates or any phase of the team. I give him a heck of a lot of credit for that."
Namath said he'd understand if Sanchez was upset over disparaging comments from teammates.
"I would think that Mark’s felings would be hurt," Namath said. "Mark worked hard doing every dadgum thing to be positive, and he keeps hearing stuff. I would think that he’s developed a tougher attitude. Not as jovial, not acting like a puppy. He’s taken a beating and he’s matured to understand the situation and what life’s about.
"I've been frustrated to hear some of the comments and the finger pointing," Namath said. "It's a team game, man, and I think he's one of the best team guys they have."
