Kenny Phillips still on target for training camp

Giants safety Kenny Phillips, who underwent microfracture knee surgery last year, still isn't quite ready to practice. But he said today that he's on target to be ready for training camp.

"The knee is great. It's coming along really well," he said after today's mini-camp workout at the Giants' Timex Performance Center training facility. Phillips did some running during the session, but did not participate in team drills. "I'm cutting, covering, backpedaling."

The good news: There has been no pain or swelling. Now it's a matter of waiting for the go-ahead from the team's medical and training staff.

"I hope I'll be ready for training camp. I feel like I'll be able to. Whatever they tell me, I'll do. If they say, 'Go practice,' I'll go practice. If they tell me to sit out, I'll sit out."

For now, Deon Grant is filling in at Phillips' spot alongside Antrel Rolle.

"The secondary is great right now," Phillips said. "They're creating turnovers, disguising a lot of things. Deon is doing a great job of communicating with the young guys, and Antrel's making plays. I can't wait to get back to be a part of it."

How far is Phillips from being his old self? "I'm not far," he said. "I'll be ready by training camp.
