Former Giants, Patriots and Jets running back/kick returner David Meggett was sentenced to 30 years in prison yesterday after being convicted in a South Carolina court on criminal sexual conduct and burglary.
Meggett, drafted by the Giants in 1989 and a member of the team's 1990 Super Bowl championship team, was convicted in a case involving an encounter with a college student at her house in North Charleston, S.C. in January, 2009, according to authorities. Meggett attended high school in North Charleston.
Meggett, 42, will appeal the verdict, according to his attorney, Beattie Butler of the Charleston County Public Defender's office.
This was the latest in a series of assault-related problems for Meggett. In 1998, he was arrested in Toronto for allegedly assaulting an escort worker after a three-way sexual encounter. He resigned in 2006 as parks and recreation director in Robersonville, N.C. after being accused of sexually assaulting his former girlfriend.
