Indianapolis - The 49ers got to the NFC Championship Game under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh and the previously maligned veteran quarterback Alex Smith. And even though Smith will become an unrestricted free agent unless the team re-signs him before March 13, the Niners are hopeful he'll be back next season.

"We're very confident in Alex," GM Trent Baalke said today at the NFL Scouting Combine. "Our confidence in him hasn't wavered at all. "We’re rwroking hard to keep our guys in place. There’s a lot of things that go on in the negotiation process. All I can say is we want to keep our group together."

Said Harbaugh: "Alex is our guy. He had a tremendous season. As a coach, you worry about a lot of things and when a quaberback is not signed, it leads to some lost sleep."
