Bill Belichick has taken a lot of heat for the botched fake punt attempt late in the second quarter of yesterday's 28-21 loss to the Jets in the AFC divisional playoffs. But up-back Patrick Chung took the fall today when he told reporters that it was his decision - and his alone - to call for the fake punt.
Per Ian Rappaport of the Boston Herald, Chung fessed up to reporters today when he discussed the matter.
"I take full responsibility," Chung said. "Leave Bill [Belichick] alone. League Scotty O. [special teams coach Scott O'Brien]. My mistake."
Chung saw something in the Jets' formation that made him think a fake would work on the play, as the Patriots faced a fourth-and-4 from their own 38 with 1:14 to play in the half. But he fumbled the direct snap and wound up being tackled for no gain. The Jets then drove for a touchdown on Mark Sanchez's 15-yard scoring pass to Braylon Edwards to give them a 14-3 heading into halftime.
