Tomorrow is a big day in the NFL, and not just because of the ongoing labor negotiations, which will stretch into a 13th day of talks before a federal mediator. There will be two pro workouts of top-ranked quarterbacks - one by Cam Newton at Auburn, and the other by Ryan Mallett of Arkansas.
Ron Rivera will take in Newton's workout to decide whether Newton will be the Panthers' rookie head coach's rookie quarterback in 2011, according to Darrin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer. Newton is also expected to check out Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley, whose stock has dropped in recent weeks after a so-so combine.
There's a good deal riding on Newton's workout, because he struggled during his drills at the combine. Newton made a somewhat controversial decision to work out at the combine - many top picks, especially quarterbacks, opt not to work out in Indianapolis and instead at their Pro Day workout. But he can go a long way toward recapturing the buzz he created during his Heisman Trophy winning season and a workout in front of several media members two weeks in San Diego.
