Super Bowl XLIV: Offense, not defense, wins this championship

Wait. What happened to the “defense wins championships” credo? Can Saints-Colts possibly be turning this time-tested adage on its ear?

Could be.

Offenses are the underpinnings of both teams’ success, as evidenced by Manning and Drew Brees (pictured) finishing 1-2 in the MVP voting. Defenses? Not much to write home about. The Colts ranked 18th in the NFL during the regular season. The Saints? They were 25th.
Key stat: No defense ranked lower than 21st in the regular season ever went on to win a Super Bowl. That 21st-ranked defense? The 2006 Colts, who beat the Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
