Woody Johnson: Getting Tim Tebow all about football; not worried about Mark Sanchez

Palm Beach, Fla. – Speaking publicly for the first time since the Jets traded for Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, Jets owner Woody Johnson said he thinks Tebow will add a special dimension to the team on the field and isn’t worried about any negative effect on starter Mark Sanchez.

“I think Tim Tebow will be a good addition to the team,” Johnson told a handful of reporters at the NFL owners meetings at The Breakers hotel. “From a football standpoint, he adds flexibility, versatility, he’s a great athlete, a big athlete. He can do a lot of things besides be the backup quarterback. All those things are going to make us a better and stronger team going forward and I’m excited to have him on board.”

Johnson believes Sanchez, who earlier this month was given a three-year contract extension through the 2016 season, won’t be adversely affected despite having a backup quarterback who led the Broncos to the playoffs last year with a string of remarkable comeback victories.

“I’m really not [concerned],” Johnson said. “Being an NFL quarterback is among the hardest jobs you can have from a pressure standpoint, an athletic standpoint. Pressure is something that Mark has no problem with. Neither does Tim Tebow. Mark is very very good. We’ve all seen him in the fourth quarter. I wish he’d get that in the first quarter, perhaps. He realizes he needs to make improvements … We have so much confidence in Mark. The body of work he’s given to us and the fans made it seem meritorious [to give him the extension.”

Johnson said acquiring Tebow had nothing to do with any marketing plans for the Jets. It was strictly a football decision.

“We work for the fans, and the fans want us to win games,” he said. “So all the decisions that we make regarding the team are just for football. If you get confused in terms of what your mission is you’re not going to accomplish the mission and our mission is to win games, pure and simple.”
