Bob Rittberger worked hard lately, getting his game in shape for the Met Open. He practiced with a fellow pro in Westchester, fitting in appointments in a busy schedule that includes running the golf shop at Garden City Golf Club and keeping up with his five kids.
But it paid off. Rittberger won a thrilling Met Open at Bethpage Black Thursday in a playoff, after the lead had bounced back and forth all afternoon.
It was a big crescendo for a season that started well, with Rittberger having made the final of the Long Island PGA in the spring, losing to Bill Van Orman.
One thing you've got to say about the Met Open: it doesn't skimp on its sites. This year it visited the 2009 U.S. Open course. Last year, it was held at Ridgewood Country Club, where The Barclays is being held now.
