Blum wins the Havemeyer

Michael Blum of Engineers Country Club joined an elite fraternity, and he did it quickly. Blum last Saturday joined the ranks of champions of the Havemeyer Invitational, a tournament that has been running for 61 years at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. It was only his second appearance in the amateur event, a club official said.

Blum defeated Michael Reardon of the Tuxedo Club, 3 and 2, in the final. The tournament is held in honor of Horace Havemeyer, the member who saved the club 66 years ago by putting up $82,500 in cash to pay off the mortgage. The event on the Tillinghast course kept going even after Havemeyer was fully repaid in 1954.

It is the second leg of the annual triple crown of major Long Island amateur tournaments. It follows the Richardson Invitational at Seawane and precedes the Walter J. Travis Invitational at the Garden City Golf Club. The 101st Travis is being held this week.
