LIer Marc Turnesa 5 over at the turn

Marc Turnesa of Rockville Centre will always remember that his first shot ever in a U.S. Open went in the water. That's what happens when one of the nines starts with a par 3.

Turnesa began on No. 10, a par 3 with about a 200-yard carry over a pond. With light rain just starting to fall, his ball fell just short and right and splashed. He made double bogey.

The problem at Congressional is, it's hard to make up strokes. Birdies are free. At this moment, with half the field having begun, only Johan Edfors is at 2 under. Nobody else is even that good. Tough place. Looks like it's going to be a grind.

Turnesa's first nine did not include a lot of good, sharp iron shots. He went short and left on No. 18 and went in the water again. He did get up and down and saved bogey. The two Texans with whom he is playing aren't doing a whole lot better. Harrison Frazar made the turn at 1 over, Chad Campbell was 3 over.
