`Rory is best I've ever seen'--McDowell

Here is what they were saying about Rory McIlroy, as he was about to become the U.S. Open champion:

Graeme McDowell, defending U.S. Open champion: “He’s the best player I’ve ever seen. I didn’t have a chance to play with Tiger when he was in his real pump. This guy is the best I’ve ever seen, simple as that. He’s great for golf, he’s a breath of fresh air for the game. Perhaps we’re ready for golf’s next new superstar and maybe Rory’s it.”

“He’s got the total package. He’s the best driver of the golf ball I’ve ever seen, his iron play is aggressive, he’s got great ball flight and he’s got a great touch around the greens. He is putting all the question marks to rest.”

Jack Nicklaus: “I think this kid is going to have a great career, I don’t think there’s any question about it. He’s humble when he needs to be humble and he’s confident when he needs to be confident.”

Phil Mickelson: “You can tell that Rory has had this type of talent in him for some time now, and to see him putting it together is pretty neat to see.”

Luke Donald: “As I've said before, I think he has probably the most talent I've ever seen from a golfer.  Lovely to watch him play, such a fluid motion, and he hits it far.  He's got a great attitude on and off the golf course… He comes from a background where his parents gave up a lot for him to do what he's doing, and I think he still knows where he came from and appreciates that.  He's very good with the fans, and it's very good for the game.”

Scott Pinckney, childhood friend of McIlroy, who played in this Open as an amateur: “You saw him at the Masters, that was a brutal, brutal beat for him. You can tell just by his attitude and his persona that he is only going to learn from it.”
