Saladino adds Travis to list of titles

The Travis Invitational always has been close to Joe Saladino's heart, especially since 2008 when he won his quarterfinal match and then proposed to his then-girlfriend Sarah. The Huntington resident didn't win that year, although he has won just about every other amateur tournament around here since then. He skipped the 2009 Travis for the wedding.

He finally achieved that major goal at Garden City Golf Club on Sunday when he won the final hole and secured a 2-up victory over 2010 champion Ben Hayes, a former USC standout and former pro.

Saladino, the reigning Met PGA and Long Island Golf Association Player of the Year, credited local pro Kirk Oguri for fitting him with a new putter that helped on greens that drew raves from the international field. That helped him add his name to many distinguished champions of the 102-year-old tournament.
