Sights 'n Sounds at Augusta

Keeping the eyes and ears open at Augusta National, a tradition like no other:

Bill Murray and a few buddies were just hanging around near the practice green the other day. A few folks recognized him, including a brazen fellow wearing U. of Georgia garb who kept asking Bill questions about all kinds of stuff. Turns out Bill is staying in S. Carolina and the guy is from South Carolina. The guy wanted to know where Bill hangs out, Bill says, "I just sleep in my car."

In contrast, a very shy, quiet fellow wearing a White Sox shirt sheepishly approached, asking to pose for a picture with Murray. Bill chided the fellow, "Don't yell, will you? You scare me when you yell at me."

Andy Roddick caddying for Zach Johnson in the Par 3 Contest, taking a swing and putting it in the water. Roddick, the tennis star, had admitted that he is improved as a golfer, but improvement from "horrible" isn't so much.

Augusta member Lynn Swan wearing his green jacket, mingling with fellow members amid the outdoor tables near the clubhouse...Member John Harris, former Commerce Bank Classic champ on LI, wearing his green jacket, giving a friend a tour of the grounds...A lone deer running around in the trees alongside the second fairway. How it gone in and out of the course is beyond me.

Robert Diamond, chief executive of Barclays, saying nothing is official about The Barclays tournament coming to Bethpage next year. But he did seem hopeful.

After an extended news conference on the 25th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus winning the 1986 Masters at 46, someone asked him if it’s conceivable that someone older than he could yet win the Masters. Nicklaus said, “Older than 71?”
