Sure is quieter here without Michelle Wie

Reporting today from Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J. Four golfers playing here today will make it into the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach next week.

No matter what happens, one thing is for sure. It's nothing like the last time I was over here: the 2006 Sectional qualifier that featured Michelle Wie. That was wild, in terms of fans and media. Today, in the media center so far, it's just the Metropolitan Golf Association officials, the Bergen Record and me.

The best score through the morning round is 4 under par by Blaine Peffley of Lebanon, Pa. Still a lot of golf to play though. Many golfers haven't finished their first round yet, and the qualifier is 36 holes.

Jim Hazen of Miller Place, Nassau Country Club assistant pro Mike Meehan and native Long Islander Len Mattiace all are tied for sixth at 1 over. Jack Druga, the Shinnecock Hills pro is 2 over.
