Welcome to Newsday's live blog of the first round of the 110th U.S. Open golf championship contested at the magnificent Pebble Beach Golf Links. The first groups went out at 7 a.m. Pacific Time off the first and 10th tees, and Rafael Cabrera-bello recorded the first birdie of the week at No. 10. Mikko Ilonen of Finland birdied No. 10 and 11 and then double-bogeyed No. 12. It will be that kind of week.
The marquee grouping in the morning round, which includes current Masters champion and co-favorite Phil Mickelson, three-time major titlist Padraig Harrington and PGA champion Y.E. Yang, goes off shortly at 11:06 Eastern Time. That's when the live blog will begin to ramp up with progress reports on the leaders and big-name players. By that time, the likes of former Open champions Retief Goosen, Geoff Ogilvy and Angel Cabrera will be on the course along with darkhorse picks Zach Johnson, Luke Donald and Tim Clark the current Players champion.
Tiger Woods doesn't tee off until 4:36 ET in a mega-group that includes England's Lee Westwood, who won last week in Memphis, and South African Ernie Els, who is enjoying a comeback year with two PGA Tour victories to his credit. Please stay with us today for updates as the national championship gets underway in siginificantly better weather than we had to put up with last June at water-logged Bethpage Black.
