Alternate almost disqualified while waiting for car rental

David Erdy, who gained entry to the U.S. Open as a first alternate after Japan's Shingo Katayama withdrew from competition with a back injury, narrowly avoided disqualification Tuesday.

Official registration and check-in was supposed to conclude at 10 a.m. and while the USGA tries to be accommodating with travel issues and other logistical problems, no one had touched base with Erdy recently until early in the afternoon.

After notifying him Monday morning that he would take Katayama's place, USGA officials had not heard from the 19-year old Indiana University golfer.

A USGA officialreached him on his cell phone and asked him to come and check-in as soon as possible. He was at JFK airport trying to get a rental car to bring him to the course.
