Tom Watson said his greatest inspiration for his 67 today was his son Michael, who is on his bag. It already had been a special week for father and son because the whole family had pulled off a big surprise--Michael popped the question to his girlfriend while the Watsons were on the course Sunday. Watson said everyone "was in on the scam," including Masters chairman Billy Payne.

Right now, Watson is tied for first with Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson and Y.E. Yang. What an amazing day at Augusta.

Today was going to be a big day anyway for Watson. He got up early to see his friends Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer hit the ceremonial first drives as honorary starters. "I had to go out there and watch my friends," Watson said. "That's the old generation here at Augusta."

Watson proved that the old generation isn't past tense. He came within one putt of winning the British Open at Turnberry last summer. "That glow is still around," he said a few minutes ago, "it's because of people who tell me, `I just have something to tell you..'
