The Southampton baseball team played two games today without three seniors, head coach Ike Birdsall and two assistants following their ejections from a game on Tuesday. The game was continued at Southampton where it was suspended on Tuesday with Glenn leading 5-1 in the top of the second inning and Southampton rallied to win 6-5.
Ricky Wesnofske singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning then scored from first on a botched pickoff attempt and two throwing errors. Collin Buoniello struck out six in 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. JV call-up Alexander Soyars went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In the regularly scheduled game, Southampton won 5-4. Freshman Alexander Soyars, called up from JV before the day, drove in Vincent Abbate and Ricky Wesnofske with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie it at 4 and two batters later Neil D'Acierno drew a bases-loaded walk for the final margin.
"We weren't expected to win either game," junior varsity coach John Loren said. "They made me look good. Everything was put in the past and there were no altercations at all."
The teams will conclude the three-game series Saturday. The two assistant coaches and three players will return. Birdsall is suspended indefinitely pending an investigation.
Southampton improved to 5-0 in League VII.
