Bess' layup lifts Holy Trinity in Florida

Richard Bess took a pass from Tyler Seidman and scooped in a layup with 11 seconds remaining, pushing Holy Trinity to a 59-57 win over over Atlantic (Delray Beach, Fla.) Monday in the Kreul Classic boys basketball tournament in Coral Springs, Fla.

Holy Trinity (3-5) had rallied from down 10 points in the fourth quarter and tied it at 57 on Michael Callahan's free throws with 50 seconds left.

Callahan had 15 points, Seidman had 14 points and six assists, and Bess had eight points. David Knowles scored 16 points for Atlantic. The Titans advance to the "Publix" bracket final and will face an opponent to be determined at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

South Side 70, Plainedge 45: Robert Akeson had 11 points and nine rebounds to lead South Side (2-0) in A-II. Kevin Waxon added 11 points.

Shoreham-Wading River 62, Mercy 29: Junior John Kovach had career highs with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Shoreham-Wading River (3-2) in a non-league game. Kevin Davis added 14 points, five assists and three steals, and senior Ian Dowd had a career-high 10 points and four rebounds. Liam McArdle scored 10 points for Mercy.

girls basketballMineola 46, Carey 37: Kerri Medlock had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Mineola (4-1) a in non-league game. Heather Gessner added six points. Liz Osowiecki had 15 points and Victoria Porcasi had 11 for Carey.

Lawrence 82, Clarke 59: Natalie Leger had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead Lawrence (2-4) in a non-league game. Nicole Robinson had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Farrah Desvarieux had 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Danielle Ferrara scored 31 points for Clarke.

Waldorf 35, Solomon Schechter 20: Ajene Miller had six points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead Waldorf (4-0) in an IPPSAL game. Amelia Bayroff scored a game-high eight points for Solomon Schechter.

Great Neck South 3, Great Neck North 0: Jordan Grossman rolled a 232 in Game 1 of a 577 series to lead Great Neck South (7-0) to a 729-496, 668-469, 733-462 victory. Dan Jennette had a 225 in Game 3 of a 579 series.

Baldwin 3, Lynbrook 0: Andrew Keiser rolled a 704 series with a 267 in Game 3 to lead Baldwin (6-1) in a 909-769, 764-738, 738-721 win. Mike Bukovsky rolled a 244 in Game 1 of a 594.

Lawrence 2, Hewlett 1: Nick Mayo bowled a 244 in Game 3 to lead Lawrence (5-2) in a 613-851, 759-731, 864-652 win. Ben Kopilow bowled a 223 in Game 3.

Bellmore-Merrick 3, MacArthur 0: Tom Bianco bowled a 420 in the first two games to lead Bellmore-Merrick (4-2) to an 806-694, 766-679, 802-744 win.
