When the Friars had their backs against the wall, that was when they were at their best.
Down a game in the postseason, just bounce back and win the next two.
That’s how the St. Anthony’s hockey team captured its fifth consecutive CHSAA championship when it beat Monsignor Farrell, 4-1, in Game 3 of its best-of-three series.
“We put ourselves in a situation where we had no...Read more »
After closing out the season 7-1 and placing second in the CHSAA championship meet, Chaminade swimming coach Angelo Pellicone is looking forward to bringing his group up to the state championship meet in Webster.
One word applies to Chaminade’s swimming squad: depth.
“Depth is critical for a team’s success because in a meet you can out score an opponent without any first place finishes,”...Read more »
Chaminade’s Connor Watson entered the season motivated by his loss in the 2013 CHSAA state finals.
Kellenberg’s Jason Javier entered the season with high aspirations but less experience on the big stage.
Both reached their goal on Sunday as the best of the best convened at Chaminade for the CHSAA state championship.
“It’s really all about mental toughness because a lot of these...Read more »
It’s been a grand season of boys basketball for St. John the Baptist, as both of the Cougars’ top players – Tavon Ginyard and Kyle Williams -- crossed the 1,000-point barrier.
Ginyard, a 5-9 junior guard, achieved the milestone on Feb. 7 in a victory over Chaminade. Ginyard wears No. 3 and that’s appropriate as he is Long Island’s top three-point shooter this season with 74. He also leads...Read more »

Earlier this season, Kellenberg boys basketball coach Jack McCutcheon asked Long Beach coach T.J. Burke how his team was doing.
The reason McCutcheon was reaching out to Burke was because the Marines had been through a lot with superstorm Sandy.
“I told him we got the gym back at Long Beach and we got new uniforms,” Burke said. “But that was about it.”
McCutcheon and the Firebirds...Read more »
When St. John the Baptist and Smithtown-Hauppauge take the ice, the game plan is to play fast. There’s no in-between.
And it’s worked.
The Cougars are in first place at 14-2-1-1 with 30 points and Smithtown-Hauppauge is right behind them in second place (14-3-0-1) with 29 points in the Suffolk County High School Hockey League.
“Smithtown is going to give us our biggest challenge...Read more »
It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
That’s the approach coach Jeff Stelmok is preaching to his St. Anthony's hockey club this early in the season.
St. Anthony’s (2-2-1), the four-time defending CHSHL ‘A’ Division champions, isn’t off to the best of starts. Yet, Stelmok doesn’t want anyone to be discouraged.
“It’s a matter of us sticking to our game plan, running it, and...Read more »
Carle Place forward Dylan Klein and St. Anthony’s midfielder Justin Carfora were named All-Americans on Monday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They were the only two players from Long Island selected.
Carfora’s overall play helped St. Anthony’s win a CHSAA state championship, the boys soccer program’s first since 2008.
“At this point in his playing career, he is...Read more »
Let's just go ahead and call this one a good sign of things to come. After being knocked out of the first round of the playoffs last year, St. Dominic kicked off its season in style, with freshman Joe Migliano shooting over 600 in his first varsity match. His 621 (he had a 213 in Game 1) was second only to stalwart Nick Bonomo's 623. Bonomo, a senior, shot a 217 in Game 3, while sophomore Vinny...Read more »
