BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — A day before Savion Lewis begins pursuit of his ultimate goal of a state championship, the Half Hollow Hills East senior was voted winner of the 2018 Mr. Basketball Award Friday by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

Lewis, the school’s all-time leader in points, assists and steals, leads Long Island in scoring at 34 points per game and also averages seven assists and five steals per game for Hills East, which faces McQuaid Jesuit at 12:45 p.m. Saturday in a state Class AA semifinal game at Floyd Maines Memorial Arena. This is the Thunderbirds’ first trip to the state Final Four.

The super-quick point guard, who accepted a scholarship to Division I Quinnipiac, is the first Long Island recipient of this award since Achraf Yacoubou of Long Island Lutheran shared the honor with Mount Vernon’s Jabarie Hinds in 2011. Tobias Harris of Half Hollow Hills West was New York’s Mr. Basketball in 2010.

Jordan Nixon of Mary Louis was named Miss New York Basketball.
