Hogan's a hero; his trey gives Mount Sinai boys first win

Pat Hogan (10 points) hit a three-pointer as time expired to give Mount Sinai its first Suffolk League VI boys basketball win of the season, 41-38 over Shoreham-Wading River Thursday.

Wayne Harris also had 10 points for Mount Sinai (1-12). Dominick Squiciarino (10 points) hit a free throw with 16 seconds left to tie the score at 38 for SWR (3-10).

Glenn 81, Amityville 76: Senior Ryan McNiff scored 20 of his career-high 23 points in a 33-19 fourth quarter to help Glenn (8-5 League VI) erase a 57-48 deficit. Phil Ammirato scored six of his 10 points down the stretch to help the Knights seal the win. Darien Croft scored 23 points and Dejuhan Gray had 22 for Amityville (9-4).

Half Hollow Hills West 94, West Babylon 66: Tobias Harris had 31 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks to lead Hills West (12-0), which clinched its second League IV title in three years. Tavon Sledge had 12 points and 10 assists. Kyle Kube led West Babylon (8-4) with 14 points.

Riverhead 70, Deer Park 67: Tim Fitzgerald (11 points, 12 rebounds) fed DiaQuan Trent (16 points) for a three-pointer with 7.7 seconds left to win it for Riverhead (3-9 League IV). Marques Charlton had 20 points for Deer Park (5-7).

Copiague 59, Smithtown West 51: Nasha Smith had 21 of his 29 points in a 27-13 fourth quarter for Copiague (7-5 League IV). Smith finished 13-for-15 from the free-throw line. Willie Rueda had 22 points and Kevin Kumpfbeck 21 for Smithtown West (2-10).

Islip 77, Rocky Point 73: Tyler Murphy (14 points) hit two free throws with 22 seconds remaining in overtime to give Islip (6-6 League V) a 74-73 lead. David Powell had 15 of his career-high 25 points in the fourth quarter and hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to tie it at 61. Reed Bisca added 14 points and 14 rebounds. Cody Thixton scored 23 points for Rocky Point (1-12).

Huntington 53, Sayville 47: John Patron (31 points, 13 rebounds) had 16 points in a 21-11 fourth quarter for Huntington (4-8 League V). Shaquan Raines added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Pat O'Connor had 16 points for Sayville (3-10).

Newfield 45, Smithtown East 40: Jeren Hall had 18 points and five assists and Brandon Piscak added 14 points and 14 rebounds for Newfield (8-3 League III). Eddie Wenzel had seven assists and seven rebounds. Alex Gray had 16 points to lead Smithtown East (4-6).

North Babylon 40, West Islip 35: Vitchel Toussaint scored North Babylon's final nine points of the game, including a putback with 45 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs (4-6 League III) a 36-35 lead. Toussaint (10 points) stole the ensuing inbounds pass, was fouled and hit both free throws to make it 38-35. Preshod McCoy had 15 points for North Babylon. Alan Tang led West Islip (0-10) with 13 points.

Baldwin 66, Carey 42: Ashanti DePass had 19 points, five rebounds and five assists and Dominique Aberdeen had 12 points, five assists, five rebounds and five steals to lead Baldwin (9-2) in Nassau Conference AA-I. Terrance Murchie had 21 points for Carey (2-9).

MacArthur 44, Long Beach 42: Kevin Monahan (19 points) hit a three-pointer to give MacArthur (3-8) the lead with 18 seconds remaining and made two free throws with 4.2 seconds left for the final margin in Conference AA-II. Vincent Moore had 14 points to lead Long Beach (0-12).


Holy Trinity 51/2, St. John the Baptist 31/2: Anthony Dellaratta rolled a 247 in Game 1 of a 659 series and was named tournament MVP to lead top-seeded Holy Trinity (11-1), which won by 38 total pins at the CHSAA bowling championships at Farmingdale Lanes. Luis Christie rolled a 226 in Game 1 of a 639 series, Sal Rivieccio had a 223 in Game 1 of a 628 series and Tom Jakubowski had 214 in Game 1 of a 599 series. Brandon DeGrass rolled a 268 in Game 2 of a 656 series for No. 2 St. John the Baptist (10-2).
