A big fourth quarter from Anthony Iakhuele and a different defensive scheme in the second half rescued Whitman (7-3) from a four-point halftime deficit en route to a 52-43 win over Bay Shore (6-4) last night in Suffolk League II. This is the first time in eight years that Whitman has won at Bay Shore, according to coach Tom Fitzpatrick.

"We were missing some chippies in the first half, and Ike only had three points," Fitzpatrick said of Iakhuele, who also had 10 rebounds. "But he came back with 12 points in the second half, 10 in the fourth quarter. He made shots from the side and started making some hustle plays and getting rebounds."

Fitzpatrick pointed to the team's better rebounding in the second half as a big factor in the victory.

"We did a different press than we normally do," he said. "They're so big and long and they go at it on the glass. We knew one of the keys to the game was to keep them off the offensive glass, and we did a better job of that. And I think we also controlled the tempo in the second half."

Myles Jones had 28 points and 14 rebounds for Whitman.

"Tonight he stepped up in a huge game and showed why he's a great player," Fitzpatrick said.

Whitman trailed 27-23 at halftime, closing that gap by the end of the third quarter. A 17-8 final quarter sealed the win.
