Live from Glens Falls: LI Lutheran falls to Buffalo Nichols, 85-66

Greetings from the Glens Falls Civic Center where Long Island Lutheran (20-7) is about ready to play Nichols from Buffalo (22-7), the state CHSAA champs, in the semifinals of the state Class A Federation tournament.

The winner will play Jamesville-DeWitt, which beat Bedford Academy, 67-54, in the other semifinal that just completed.

This game features two big-time college prospects: Lutheran junior Achraf Yacoubou, a Villanova commit, and Nichols 6-8 senior center Will Regan, who is headed to Virginia.

FINAL: Nichols 85, Lutheran 66

Yacoubou picked up his third foul 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, and the Crusaders missed two threes before Joe Savaglio hit his first to make it 67-48 with 6:12 left in the game.

Wier made two foul shots and scored on fake on Yacoubou to extend the lead to 71-48. Yacoubou missed a open reverse layin, and kind of hung his head as if saying, “It’s been a tough day.” Regan quickly added a two-pointer to give Nichols a 73-48 lead with under five minutes remaining.

Yacoubou’s putback made it 75-54 with four minutes left. Evan Grenda foul shots gave Nichols a 82-58 lead with 2:00 left. Gliedman scored had a bucket for his 11th and 12th points of the fourth quarter to cut it to 84-66 with 53.5 to go.

During the game, Wier, a sophomore for Nichols, reached 1,000 points for his career. He had 31 points tonight.

END OF THIRD QUARTER: Nichols 67, Lutheran 43

Regan opened second-half scoring with a banker in the paint. Yacoubou hit his first three to make it 49-35 1:30 into the third. Wier hit a stepback three for Nichols that made it 54-35 with 4:32. Wier then hit his sixth three of the game less than a minute later ti give Nichols a 57-35 lead. Wier has been very impressive so far, also helping out on defense on Yacoubou, and he’s only a sophomore.

It was 59-39 when Lawton scored on a drive and on a fastbreak layin off a Yacoubou pass for a 4-0 run. Regan ended that with an inside move to make it 61-43. Vandegriff then had a nice pump fake and score in the paint for Nichols.

Dieter Clauss made two foul shots to give Nichols a 65-43 lead with 40.0 left and Regan added another two points in the paint with about 10 seconds left.


Wier leads with 18 points and Regan had 16 and Nichols shot 17-for-25 for 68 percent. Gliedman has 10 points and Florin has nine.

HALFTIME: Nichols 47, Lutheran 32

Florin hit a three to open the second quarter to cut it to 21-15 then Regan scored inside for Nichols followed by a quick Gliedman basket. Vandegriff hit two foul shots and Wier hit a three to put Nichols up 28-17 with 5:35 left in the second.

Yacoubou got his first points on an inside move less than 10 seconds later, but missed a foul shot for the three-point play. Yacoubou then caught a longcourt pass from DeNicola and made a reverse layin, was fouled and made the shot for the three-point play. That play pulled Lutheran within, 28-22, but Wier responded with another three for Nichols.

Regan has a nice move in the paint to Nichols up 33-22 and MacKinnon made another three to make it 36-22 with about 3:30 left. Florin then hit a three, but Regan came back the other inside for two. Regan made 1 of 2 foul shots but got the rebound off the miss, and converted a three-point play for 42-28 with 2:20 left in the half.

Lawton hit two free throws. Regan had a block on Yacoubou in the paint and MacKinnon made a three to give Nichols a 15-point lead, up 45-30 with just over a minute left. DeNicola made a long jumper. Wier had a one-handed putback off a Regan missed three-pointer as the shot clock was winding down. Florin then missed a tough three-point attempt before the first-half buzzer.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Nichols 21, Lutheran 12

Gliedman opened scoring with a three-pointer and Lawton gave Lutheran a 5-4 lead on a putback 2:35 into the game. But Nichols went on a 9-0 run with seven points from Wier and two free throws from MacKinnon to lead 14-5 with 3:00 left in the quarter. Florin hit a three to end the run, but Nichols responded with a 5-0 run on a three by Canestro and a long two-pointer from Wier. It was 19-8 with 2:29 left in the quarter.

Regan scored inside to make it 21-8. Ryan DeNicola scored off the bench for Lutheran to make it 21-10 with 29.9 left, and off a missed free throw for the change for a three-point play, Gliedman was fouled and made two shots to make it 21-12.
