Monahan leads MacArthur to Jeff Shaw title

Kevin Monahan had 15 points and four rebounds to lead MacArthur to a 51-40 victory over Island Trees in the championship game of the Jeff Shaw Memorial Tournament at MacArthur.

"Kevin drove to the hole real hard, was able to create shots for teammates as well but defensively was where he was best," MacArthur boys basketball coach Eric Rubin said. "He helped shut down their best player in the second quarter."

Monahan had three steals in the second quarter while guarding Mike Witteck of Island Trees. Witteck had 24 points but was held to just two when Monahan was guarding him.

Monahan scored eight of his 20 points in the second quarter as the Generals (3-1) outscored the Bulldogs 20-4 and took an eight-point halftime lead. Point guard Tyler Eppich had three points and five assists with no turnovers.

"We've really been focusing on communication, defense, finding shooters and we really made Island Trees make some tough shots in that quarter," Rubin said.

MacArthur's William Cheshire, who hit the game-winning three pointer with one second left in Wednesday's first-round game against Division, was named Tournament MVP.

MacArthur's Kevin Roach and Charles Cintron were named to the All-Tournament team along with Witteck and Casey Hastings of Island Trees. Hastings scored nine points in defeat for the Bulldogs.

Plainedge defeated Division in the consolation game.
