The Suffolk public school playoffs are about to begin – Class A opens Thursday; Class B on Friday; Class C next week. So how about one final set of regular-season rankings. Then Zog’s Blog will take a hiatus from the rankings and let the playoffs unfold. I’ll post a final set of rankings when the state tournaments are over.

The top seeds in each class are West Islip (A), Comsewogue (B) and Bayport-Blue Point (C). The top-ranked Lions are seeking their third consecutive state championship and fifth in the last six years. They are riding a 37-game winning streak that dates back to a 2010 season-opening loss to Sachem North.

No. 2-ranked Ward Melville suffered its only Division I loss to West Islip, a 7-6 overtime thriller that ended on the goal of the year – goalie Kyle Turri’s spectacular coast-to-coast jaunt. Wouldn’t the Patriots just love a rematch in the county championship game at Stony Brook?

And speaking of rematches, Comsewogue is still seething over its heartbreaking overtime loss to Garden City in last season’s Class B Long Island Championship game. I know the Warriors, along with West Islip the only undefeated teams on the Island, have been focused since Day 1 on getting back to the LIC and earning a trip to the states.

So let the action begin and follow it all in Newsday,, on my blog and, yes, you can even follow Zog on Twitter (@zogsport7).

Enjoy the playoffs!
