When Wantagh scored an astounding eight straight goals in the first 4:33 of the third quarter, a player who did not register a goal or an assist was right in the middle of it all. The rampage featured the faceoff dominance of Mike Fitzpatrick, who won 18 of 22 draws in just three quarters as the Warriors walloped Carey, 19-5, last night in a Nassau Class B lacrosse quarterfinal at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

"If I win most of the faceoffs, we'll win. It gives our offense more chances to score," said Fitzpatrick, who gave Wantagh (14-3) plenty of scoring opportunities. Beneficiaries included Matt Balzano and Brian von Bargen (four goals, two assists each) and Corey Stavis (three goals, two assists.)

The Warriors will face Manhasset in a semifinal at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium. Carey finished 8-9. Balzano had a natural hat trick and von Bargen had two goals and an assist during the third period explosion. "Once we get it going, we feed off each other," von Bargen said.

Manhasset 16, Bethpage 5: The Indians' Kevin Overlander was equally dominant on faceoffs, winning 17 of 20 to lead Manhasset in the other quarterfinal. His prowess allowed Manhasset (12-4) to outshoot the Golden Eagles 21-3 in the first half in building an 8-1 advantage that kept expanding with a six-goal third period. Kevin Katzmann scored three goals and Dino Lavelle, Christian Zanetis and James Clarke had two each. Quinn Moroney registered four assists.

"I want to give us a head start on offense. It's an advantage if we get our fast break going," Overlander said. "We were working a lot on making quick passes."

Most of those were in the Bethpage end of the field as Overlander's proficiency on faceoffs produced a 39-11 advantage in shots. Bethpage is 13-4.
