Matthew Finn scored with 10 seconds left on a feed from Kevin Teresky to give Whitman an 11-10 upset win over previously unbeaten Ward Melville in Suffolk League I. Finn had five goals and Matt Gierl added 12 saves for Whitman.
The win is Whitman’s first in school history against traditional Suffolk power Ward Melville, according to coach Bob Howell. Whitman's program began in 1959, Howell said.
“I’d like to play this game over again,” an excited Howell said Thursday night. “It was a real team effort. Defensively, the kids played great and we had a lot of patience on offense.”
Whitman improves to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in league. Ward Melville, which was ranked No. 5 in the latest Inside Lacrosse national high school poll, falls to 6-1, 4-1.
Ward Melville's Kevin McElhone (four goals) tied the score at 10 with 2:09 left. For Whitman, Teresky had three goals and three assists and Myles Jones had two goals and three assists. Dan Remstein and Pat White led a strong defensive effort for Whitman.
Al Destefano had three goals and one assist for Melville.
Asked how big the win is for Whitman, Howell said: “Words can’t even describe.”
