Ever Torres scored off a feed from Edgar Sorto in the 36th minute as Brentwood handed Commack, the top-ranked boys soccer team in the New York state coaches poll, its first loss of the season, 2-0, Thursday in League I.
"We feel we're right there with anybody," Brentwood coach Ron Eden said. "They're a very good team, not taking anything away from them. It's another game in the league and it's just another step toward the playoffs. They're a good team. They were 13-0 for a reason. I definitely want to give them their props. It was a playoff atmosphere today."
It was Torres' seventh game-winning goal of the season, and the 70th goal of his four-year varsity career. The senior forward is ninth all-time in Suffolk.
Jefferson Portillo scored on a side volley off a pass from Kenny Escolero in the 46th minute to make it 2-0. Jason Murillo had eight saves in his 10th shutout of the season. Ryan Sinnot made 11 saves for Commack (13-1). Brentwood improved to 10-1-1.
"We had a few good chances the first game we played them, didn't finish them, and ended up losing in double overtime," Eden said. "I told the kids if they get their chances they had to finish today, and they did."
