Southampton senior midfielder Matias Ruiz is the 14th player in Suffolk history to reach 60 goals. The four-year varsity player notched his 60th goal today with two in a 4-0 win over Wyandanch.
Ruiz scored 11 goals in his freshman season, 17 as a sophomore, and 14 as a junior. He has 18 this season.
"He's a great player," Southampton coach Dave Riley said. "He can score in different ways. To get 18 goals as a senior says a lot. It's not like he's under the radar. Teams have known about him for four years."
Ruiz has led Southampton to the Suffolk Class B finals in two of the last three seasons. Southampton is 12-0-1 and 9-0 in League VII and well on its way to the top seed in the postseason.
"Ruiz has been clocked at 80 miles per hours on his shot," Riley said. "It's also a tribute to the team for his accomplishment."
