Meet the players who earned first-team honors for Newsday's All-Long Island boys cross country team in 2016.
Long Island runner of the year: Christopher Tibbetts, Sachem North, Sr.
Tibbetts used a ferocious kick to move from fourth place to second in the final 500 meters of the Class A state public school championship meet, finishing in 15:30.5. His silver-medal time was also the thirdfastest among all four classes.
"I was already gassed because it was a little faster than I was used to," Tibbetts said of the final stretch. "I started kicking my legs and going. I was just able to catch [Guilderland's Noah Carey] for second. I barely got him at the end. It was a great race."
Tibbetts also won the Class A race at the Suffolk State Qualifier in 16:09.40 and the championship race at the Brown Invitational in 15:06.35.
Nassau runner of the year: Peter Zimbalist, Syosset, Sr.
Zimbalist, who used an outstanding kick to come from behind, ran a 16:11.37 en route to a Class I Championship at the Nassau championship. The time was the fastest at Bethpage State Park this year. Zimbalist was third in the Class A race at the Nassau State Qualifier in 16:22.62.
Timothy Euler, East Meadow, Sr.
Euler punched his ticket to the state public school championships with a 16:12.03 victory in the Class A race at the Nassau State Qualifier. He was second in the Class I championship, running a 16:15.75.
Michael Grabowski, Smithtown West
Grabowski was near the top in Suffolk all season. He finished third in the Suffolk Division Championships in 16:41.94 and third in the Class A Suffolk State Qualifier in 16:21.77.
Jonathan Lauer, Sachem North, Sr.
The Columbia University-bound senior won the Suffolk Divisions Championship in 16:04.45. He was the fastest Long Islander at the state Federation Championships, finishing 16th in 16:37.5.
Kal Lewis, Shelter Island, Fr.
When it came to small schools on Long Island, no one was better than Kal Lewis. When it came to small schools in the state, few could match his speed. Lewis was fourth in the Class D public school state championship in 16:21.8.
Trevor Marchhart, Garden City, Sr.
Marchhart won the Class B race at the Nassau State Qualifier in 16:21.20. He was also the top Class II runner in the county, running a 16:23.15 at the Nassau Class County Championships
Coach of the year: Peter Schieck, Smithtown
Smithtown won both the Suffolk Divisions Championship and the Class A Championship at the Suffolk State Qualifier and finished fifth in Class A at the public school state championships.
