Meet Newsday's 2015 All-Long Island girls cross country team.
Long Island runner of the year: Diana Vizza, North Shore, Sr.
After a top ten finish in the 5,000 meters at New Balance Nationals in the spring, Diana Vizza had a feeling that her senior cross country season would be one to remember. But, even she could not have imagined just how memorable it would be. The senior won the New York State Class B Public School Championship, running an incredibly challenging Monroe-Woodbury High School course in 18 minutes, 15.6 seconds.
She followed her championship up with an eighth place finish in the highly competitive New York State Federation Championship, running the 5-kilometer Bowdoin Park course in 18:26.4. A week later, Vizza qualified for Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon by clocking an 18:11.5 at Bowdoin Park.
She placed 34th at the national summit in 17:54.30.
Suffolk runner of the year: Alexandra DeCicco, Sachem East, Sr.
Alexandra DeCicco joined Vizza as Long Island's only representatives at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon. She qualified for the prestigious meet by placing eighth in 18:23.2 at the Nike Cross New York Regional Championships at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger's Falls. DeCicco won the Class A race at the Suffolk State Qualifier in 19:08.42.
Alexandra Hays, Shoreham-Wading River, Jr.
Alexandra Hays was second in the Suffolk Class A State Qualifier in 19:46.65. She was 15th at the New York State Class B Public School Championship in 19:23.6.
Katherine Lee, Shoreham-Wading River, Soph.
Katherine Lee won the Class B race at the Suffolk State Qualifier in 19:18.81. She finished third at the New York State Class B Public School Championship in 18:54.7.
Taylor McClay, Eastport-South Manor, Jr.
Taylor McClay finished second in the Suffolk Class A State Qualifier in 19:33.88. She ran a 19:23.7 at the New York State Class A Public School Championship.
Katie Murphy, Hauppauge, Jr.
Katie Murphy finished third in the Suffolk Class A State Qualifier in 19:42.83. Murphy ran a 19:19.8 at t
Reilly Siebert, Syosset, Soph.
Reilly Siebert won the Nassau Class I Championship in 18:29.20. She finished 14th at the New York State Class A Public School Championship in 18:48.8.
Coach of the year: Dan Schaub, Sachem East
On top of coaching Alexandra DeCicco to a Nike Cross Nationals berth, Dan Schaub led Sachem East to a fourth place finish at Nike Cross New York Regionals. The 19:31.2 average time was the fastest for a Long Island team since North Shore in 2011, he said.
