Sachem East, Garden City and Friends Academy captured Long Island championships on Saturday, earning the trek up north to the state tournament, which is being hosted by Cicero-North Syracuse High School. The semifinals are on Saturday (Nov. 19) and the finals will be Sunday.
Class A state semifinals: Sachem East vs. Greene (Section IV) at 11:30 a.m. Should the Flaming Arrows advance, they would face the winner of the Liverpool/Mamaroneck game in the final at 10 a.m. Sunday. Sachem East will compete in the state tournament for the first time.
Class B state semifinals: Garden City vs. Maine-Endwell (Section IV) at 3:30 p.m. If the Trojans win, they’ll get the winner of the Lakeland/Camden game in the final at noon Sunday. Garden City is after its first state title since 2008. They lost to Lakeland in the final last year.
Class C state semifinals: Friends Academy vs. Greenwich (Section II) at 7:30 p.m. Should the Quakers reach the final, they would take on the winner of the Cazenovia/Bronxville game at 2 p.m. Sunday. Friends Academy has made three trips to states – most recently in 2006 – but is in search of its first championship.
* Tickets will be $8, good for all games each day... Cicero-North Syracuse has a good concession area - at least they did last year - with decent food, programs and field hockey equipment for sale (although, if you've made it to the state tournament, you probably already own a stick). And the buffalo chicken pizza wasn't bad.
** The Syracuse weather looks relativley mild, certainly, compared to last year. The expected low on Saturday is 38 degrees. Sunday's low will be 42, though there is rain in the forecast. If you're making the trip up, drive safely.
