"The Shot" opened the door and the New Rochelle High School's hoopsters are determined to walk through and continue their march toward the New York State finals.

As nearly anyone who has been near a television knows, the Huguenots beat Mount Vernon when Khalil Edney, hit a 55-foot shot as time expired. That miracle buzzer-beater in the Section 1 Class AA championship game and the exultant celebration afterward has been played and replayed around the country.

Next up will be a semifinal game Saturday afternoon in Glens Falls against the Northport Tigers.

"The shot really adds to the significance of just our whole season and our whole playoff run," says guard Drew Peterson, 16. "We really believe that it's destiny."

Assistant coach Adam Capellan said Edney's shot gave the team a boost.

"The shot helped us get the momentum into the playoffs . . .," he said.

Edney, 17, said his shot against Mount Vernon "changed a lot of our lives."

But even the senior star would prefer to close the next game in less dramatic fashion.

"No last-minute shot is going to be needed," he said.
