Pierson/Bridgehampton has reached the top

It was November Madness at Ward Melville High School last night with a scene similar to that after an NCAA Final Four basketball game as the Pierson/Bridgehampton fans rushed the field and joined in the team’s celebration at midfield.
"We finally won!" Sarah Barrett screamed.
They did, 2-1, over No. 2 Southampton to capture their first Suffolk Class C field hockey title since 2005.
The top-seeded Whalers (10-5) rallied from a first-half deficit and Barrett scored the winner with 11:10 left.
"To be able to share in this with these girls and some of our fans," Barrett, a senior said, "there’s no feeling like this."
Since Pierson/Bridgehampton last wore the crown, the class had been owned by Port Jefferson. The Whalers’ previous two postseasons had been tombstoned in the county final with crushing overtime defeats at the hands of the Royals. Now the, "We’ll get ‘em next year" promises can be packed away.
"These have been my freshman," said Whalers coach Shannon Judge, who took over the team in 2006. She struggled to stifle her giddiness. "It's my first title, too. We came in together and I’ve been waiting for this for this team."
Tara Watson had put Southampton (8-7) up with 3:31 remaining in a first half that Judge described as "miserable" for Pierson/Bridgehampton. But Alexa Lantiere answered at 17:02 of the second half with a reverse sweep to tie it.
And, on the Whalers’ 11th penalty corner of the half, Barrett fired one into the left corner from five feet out.
"It’s the best game ever," Lantiere said. "Awesome… just awesome."
